People and Planet – Sir David Attenborough’s take on overpopulation

TOP believes there is no better video presentation on the consequences of overpopulation than Sir David Attenborough’s RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) President’s Lecture. The well-known British naturalist delivers an impressive speech explaining why population growth is a multiplier of every environmental problem.

Given that the Earth has physical limits, “sustainable growth” is an oxymoron, and population growth will eventually stop. It can only happen in one of two ways: sooner through collective decision to have fewer human births, or later through increased deaths due to famine, diseases and wars for scarce resources. Sir David Attenborough give us hope that if we choose the first option, a voluntary end to population growth is possible. For this to be realized, we must break the taboo around discussing overpopulation, change large family social norms, improve education and health care and implement effective population policies.

David Attenborough engagingly delivers the message that every human being on the Earth should understand: every single environmental and social problem on this finite planet becomes more difficult and ultimately impossible to solve with even more people.
