Don’t burn care: save contraceptives, save lives

Contraceptives that could prevent 100,000 unsafe abortions are sitting in a Belgian warehouse, at risk of being burned under Donald Trump’s order. Please consider sending an email to the Flemish ministers who have the power to stop it.

by WeMove Europe

In a quiet warehouse in Flanders, Belgium, nearly $10 million in life-saving contraceptives sit sealed in boxes – waiting. Not for patients, but for fire. [1]

Trump ordered them to be destroyed. But Europe doesn’t have to play along. Our laws give us the power to resist Trump’s crusade against women’s rights.

Flemish and European laws ban the destruction of still-usable medicines. Legal experts agree: the Flemish government can stop the burn, and help get these contraceptives to the women and girls who need them. [2] They just need the courage to act.

This aid is vital for the health and lives of more than 1.4 million women and girls. [3] But Flemish leaders need to act now, before it’s too late.

And that’s where you come in.

Over 100,000 people have signed the petition – now we need to turn up the pressure. With enough public support, Flemish leaders will have the backing they need to do the right thing – and show that Europe won’t stay silent while women’s health and rights are under attack.

Send an email to key Flemish ministers and tell them: Stop the burn. Stand up to Trump and protect women’s health and dignity.

The good news: our pressure is working.

The Flemish government has sent an inspection to the warehouse in Flanders. Trump’s government appears to be backing down too – the incineration was scheduled for the end of July, and yet, the medical aid is still intact. [4]

Why? Because people like you are speaking out. Health organisations, politicians, and the media are raising the alarm – and it’s making leaders think twice. [5]

Now is the time to ramp up the pressure.

Email Flemish ministers now – demand they stop the burn and protect women’s health from Trump’s attack.

This isn’t just about boxes in a warehouse. It’s about whether Europe will cave to Trump’s global assault on reproductive rights, or take a stand.

    1. I consider this to be just more inflammatory anti-Trump rhetoric.
    2. Where are the “environmental” and “population” groups that used to directly fund family planning? (Oh, I know, they decided that population “doesn’t matter” because it’s linked to “controversial” things, like religion and immigration, that might cost them members. Plus, the Sierra Club, in return for a $240 million contribution agreed to back off population because it gets into thorny issues like immigration.

      Pure whataboutism.

Well, the Trump administration was wrong to cancel this valuable foreign aid, and doubly wrong to destroy useful contraceptives rather than allowing them to be put to use. We can criticize these actions while still criticizing enviros who bury their heads in the sand re: population matters.

Donald Trump has taken several actions during his presidency that significantly restricted access to birth control and abortion globally. Here’s a breakdown of the most impactful measures:

🌍 Global Restrictions on Abortion Access
    1. Reinstatement and Expansion of the Global Gag Rule Trump reinstated the Global Gag Rule (also known as the Mexico City Policy) early in his presidency. This policy:

Blocks U.S. funding to foreign NGOs that provide abortion services, referrals, or even information—even if they use non-U.S. funds for those services.

Was expanded under Trump to apply to nearly $12 billion in global health assistance, affecting programs for HIV/AIDS, maternal health, and more.

Led many clinics worldwide to shut down or scale back services, even for non-abortion-related care.

    2. Rejoining the Geneva Consensus Declaration Trump’s administration rejoined this international declaration, which:

Opposes abortion as a human right.

Asserts that there is no international obligation to fund or promote abortion.

Aligns the U.S. with countries that restrict reproductive rights.

    💊 Birth Control Access Undermined
    1. Destruction of Contraceptive Supplies The Trump administration attempted to destroy nearly $10 million worth of taxpayer-funded birth control supplies intended for low-income countries. These included long-term contraceptives that could have helped over 1.5 million women.

    2. Funding Cuts to Family Planning Programs Executive orders signed in 2025 revived earlier anti-abortion policies, cutting federal funding to overseas health organizations that:

    Distribute contraception.

    Provide HIV prevention services.

    Offer abortion-related counseling or referrals.

    🧠 Strategic and Administrative Moves
    1. Personnel and Policy Shifts Trump appointed officials with strong anti-abortion views to key health and foreign aid positions, influencing policy direction and funding priorities.

    2. Website and Information Suppression Some government websites removed or altered content related to reproductive health, limiting public access to accurate information.

These actions have had ripple effects across global health systems, especially in regions where U.S. aid plays a critical role.
