The Progressive Left are the Bad Guys Too

The “Progressive Left” loves to shift blame for the climate crisis onto the climate-change denying right. But close examination reveals that they are just as guilty…

by Michael Seebeck

The progressive Left is as complicit as the climate-denying Right in driving mass extinctions, biosphere collapse, and anthropogenic climate change. Each side enables the other, accelerating ecological ruin through complementary roles.

Progressive media, think tanks, NGOs, and parties endlessly blame billionaires, corporate greed, and “big polluters” for the bulk of emissions and ecocide—deforestation, industrial agriculture, and habitat destruction. These claims are at best half-truths. What they systematically omit is demand: the relentless pressure from billions of consumers.

Close examination of the policies and messaging of major environmental (eg Greenpeace) and climate NGOs, such as Extinction Rebellion, and of prominent figures such as George Monbiot, reveals the same pattern. They prioritise perceived human rights and firmly deflect attention from overpopulation and population growth, insisting that rapid environmental destruction and rising fossil-fuel emissions stem primarily from the greed and profiteering of the corporate Right and the billionaires. Because they refuse to confront increasing demand driven by population growth and rising affluence, they align with the progressive Left in enabling the very corporate and billionaire enrichment—and the accelerated ecological destruction—they purport to oppose.

Borneo deforestation 1950 – 2020 Utterly outrageous and criminal. The usual narrative is that the palm oil industry is responsible. This is largely true but too superficial. Local and global increases in population and affluence have driven the increasing demand for palm oil products, and local increasing populations after Indonesia’s “transmigrasi” from overpopulated Java and Bali have needed employment – provided by the palm oil industry. The Left helps ensure an endless supply of those consumers—globally through resistance to population discussion, and in Western countries via advocacy for mass immigration and open borders. This serves corporate interests perfectly: expanding markets for ever-rising consumption driven by both population growth and rising affluence, while also providing a ready pool of cheap labour when needed. The corporate Right gets what it wants; the Left complies.

Wealth redistribution is presented as essential to solving environmental crises, with rising affluence for billions treated as an unquestionable good. Yet this ignores a basic reality: the already affluent—including most progressive advocates themselves, by global standards—show little willingness to relinquish their own wealth or consumption in any serious redistribution. No meaningful limits are placed on wealth accumulation in developing countries either; suggesting such limits is dismissed as racist. Almost no human, anywhere, does not aspire to greater wealth and higher consumption. Romantic claims that people in developing countries or indigenous communities possess intrinsically lower impacts or superior biodiversity management, irrespective of numbers, are themselves a form of soft racism. Humans are biologically the same. Indigenous peoples have often protected biodiverse areas when left alone, yet historical evidence also shows many instances of selling off land for mining, logging, and other extractive industries in exchange for wealth. Lower consumption levels typically reflect relative poverty, not an inherent rejection of material aspirations. Given the opportunity, nearly everyone accepts more.

Indonesia's population has grown from around 248 million in 2013 to 281 million in 2024.
Indonesia’s population growth, with increasing affluence, has also contributed to demand for products made with palm oil, as well as directly fueling rapid deforestation in Borneo, Sumatra, Bali, Sulawesi and West Papua, and many smaller islands. Image source: CEIC

Far from solving the crisis, wealth redistribution is likely to intensify it. Raising the consumption of billions expands markets for chemicals, disposables, electronics, vehicles, and palm-oil products—delivering a vast windfall to the very corporations the Left condemns. Celebrating rising affluence as a human right functions as virtue-signaling that absolves the affluent Left in developed countries of its own overconsumption.

Corporate greed cannot function without markets. Without surging demand for the products of destruction, and without an expanding labour force willing to log, burn forests, and hunt wildlife, there is no large-scale ecocide. Fixating solely on supply ignores the engine that powers it.

The deeper driver remains continued population growth. On this the progressive Left stays conspicuously silent, thereby shielding both corporate interests and the Right by diverting attention from the fundamental pressure of numbers.

The capitalist machine cannot be defeated or cleanly replaced. It has operated since the advent of agriculture, profiting from its expansion and enabling further growth. No system has proven more efficient at the rapid commodification of nature and “natural resources.” Even socialist and communist governments have run their economies through capitalist mechanisms. Regulation is possible in theory, yet it has always proven deficient: the growth imperative itself generates loopholes, capture, and corruption that permit relentless expansion.

The only realistic path to limiting capitalism’s destruction of the biosphere and climate is restriction of supply—restriction of consumers, of labour, of capital flows, and of fossil fuels. The progressive Left readily champions the last of these. Few, however, confront the implications. Modern agriculture feeding billions depends on fossil fuels; so does the production, transport, and backup of renewable infrastructure. Eliminate fossil fuels without addressing demand and population, and food systems collapse for vast numbers of people. Reliable energy systems collapse with them.

It has escaped the progressive Left that capitalism readily corrupts science. They accept the claim that “green” energy is low-emissions and can fully replace fossil fuels. This rests on a fundamental category error: treating intermittent, weather-dependent sources as equivalent to dispatchable ones. The impossible physical scale of renewables required for total replacement—and the massive, biosphere-destroying mining, processing, and land-use demands that would entail—is likewise waved away. When belief aligns with vested interests, inconvenient evidence is discounted. Acknowledging the impossibility would force a confrontation with population; in the Left’s preferred parallel universe of boundless resources and infinite land, such limits violate their conception of human rights. Extrapolation of current trends toward widespread human suffering is simply ignored.

When crises of famine or energy shortfall arrive, the same progressive Left will almost certainly accept further fossil-fuel expansion and accompanying biospheric destruction—something it already enables in practice through its silence on demand and numbers.

The corporate Right needs the progressive Left to greenwash and morally validate endless growth in consumption of food, energy, minerals, housing, and infrastructure. The progressive Left needs the corporate Right to deliver the rising affluence it champions for billions, without ever confronting population growth. In this mutual dependency, the functioning biosphere, the climate, and biodiversity are the permanent losers.

Thank you for pointing out that righteous progressives have no clothes in regards to economic growth.

“They prioritise perceived human rights and firmly deflect attention from overpopulation and population growth…”

Yes! Sure need more of this straight, truth talk.

Great truth telling essay, stating the obvious that humans cannot do infinite population and consumption growth on a finite planet. But what we need to do now is to establish some limits and goals for the world and the nation states within it. Herman Daly and Brian Czech have outlined things that can be actually done as opposed to us continuing to say simply that we should ‘do with less’ or ‘be sustainable’. However many of their means to a sustainable end are complex manipulations that involve all manner of appropriation and redistribution while populations presumably continue to increase and so probably will resist any substantial reduction of resource consumption, ecosystem liquidation and increasing pollution. While a much simpler, hard to evade and sabotage goal, which could drag along with it much less environmental degradation to the point that the human population could end up being sustainable, would be to set a global population target of 2.5 billion from the present 8.8 billion by some specified future date. Then this could be apportioned out equally to all nations via population goals of approximately 25% of what they are now. For example, the USA could pledge to reduce its population to about 85 million consumers and polluters perhaps by the year 2150. But again I don’t think that the behavior of elites who benefit from perpetual growth, no matter how much it harms the biosphere and citizen majorities, will be changed – unless we establish hard numbers and limits that will effectively obstruct their motivations to continually increase their total wealth and the number of common citizens that they control.

The progressive left wants change. The climate denying right does everything it can to prevent change. So, not as guilty. We were born into this mess and the system is rigged to prevent change.

One needs to be licensed to own any pet put having children and raising socially inadequate humans undermining quality of life for everyone is sacrosanct.

I have pointed out to Brendan Montague who is chief Editor at The Ecologist that as a Marxist he wants to plan everything, but when it comes to reproduction he is a neo-liberal and a mignon of the Capitalists. He has not communicated with me since.

One major culprit is the Potsdam Institute who are a “scientific” arm of the Catholic church it would appear. Overpopulation obviously one scientific truth too many for them, and sadly they have made themselves the go to authority on climate change. They will never state that “more feet=more heat” as not only do we emit CO2 and methane amongst other harmful gases but we destroy carbon sinks by destroying the other species in our vast numbers.

Only a couple of days ago The Lancet published a list of threats that would wipe out humanity. As it was done under the umbrella of the Roesling Institute you can guess which threat was omitted… Apparently it is of solace that if we disappear all together in vast numbers that is a better thing to happen!

Every time I try to engage with a member of the “progressive left” on the concept of human population proportionality, I am called an “eco-fascist”.

The rigidity of social justice types acts as an important plank in the divisive platforms of the media disinformation complex (news, education, entertainment) that keeps us anesthetized into thinking (sic) that the status quo is sustainable.

I’m a hard core lefty who strongly supports a 3-4 billion sustainable population. I got my vasectomy in 1976 at age 23, unmarried, no kids. Later in life, I endowed vasectomy funds through Planned Parenthood in Eugene, OR and Los Angeles. I also help fund World Vasectomy Day since its inception 13 years ago. It’s one day in the fall when hundreds of doctors in over 30 countries perform thousands of vasectomies for free.

In addition to that, I work to kill the internal combustion industry so that no more gas-burning vehicles are made. We’re about 9 years away from achieving that goal. After 2035, it’s unlikely there will be any new gas cars for sale in the world. After that, only EVs will be available. Existing gas cars will age out over the following decade leaving us with essentially a 100% electric fleet powered by an ever-greening grid.
